| THE ROCKS PICTURED TO THE LEFT ARE GENERICALLY DESCRIBED BELOW, AND SUBJECT TO PRIOR SALE.(Click on them to see more views and specifics)
These $100 and up hand-carved lava rocks will be more than 18 inches long or wide or tall, and have an interior volume more than two quarts. They are intended to be used as bonsai pots. All are either low density obsidian in several shades of dark gray, or pumice shading tan to gray. Obsidian is a glass-like lava, possessing a beautiful, shiny, lustrous, glinting surface- with sharp edges all over, so they need to be handled with gloved hands. Pumice is the compacted dust which volcanos explode into the atmosphere. Pumice looks like sandstone, but is about one-tenth the weight, approximately the same weight as this obsidian. Both of these kinds of lava rock are called Featherstone in the trade which is more of a marketing term than a scientific definition, making it difficult for buyers to determine exactly what it is they are buying. All the descriptions here will be labeled either Obsidian or Pumice. The individual descriptions list length x width x height; total weight; total approximate volume of the cavity; planting hole dimensions through the top of the pot, and idiosyncracies. Most of the planting holes are shifted toward the back of the top surface to maximize the amount of surface of rock viewed. All planting holes lead to one, common, interior cavity. All of the rocks are selected either for a rugged weathered appearance, or a graceful weathered appearance, and all of the planting holes are located to show-off the viewed surfaces. The interior cavity is almost always much larger than the hole-thru, and is as big as possible to machine with a hand grinder, and is roughly the same shape as the outside of the rock. Necessarily, since the hole-thru is shifted toward the rear, the cavities are shifted toward the front. This can be problematic if a tree has
equilateral roots. Exceptions will be noted below. To request a specific shape or footprint, or to ask questions about a specific pot, please Email BillStruhar. The shape of the pocket will result in breaking of the pot if it is exposed to freezing with a moist mass of soil inside, so expect to overwinter the tree in burlap and replant every Spring if you use the rock for a temperate plant where the pot will freeze. This is only a moderately "strong" rock, at best, and has some thin vertical walls (for arts' sake), and will be most serviceable if used for a tropical tree. The bottom of the outside is approximately flat, so they will only sit on one surface.TO ORDER A POT: Tell us your preference to insure that it is still available.
